Arkansas Diamonds

We just came back from Arkansas.  I had given Fred a trip to Crater of Diamonds State Park for his birthday.   It is an old volcano cone and diamonds keep coming up from the depths.  They plow the field and this helps churn up new diamonds.  We successfully managed to make the trip during some very nice weather.  The day we went to dig it was mid-60s and very pleasant.  I wouldn’t want to be there in the summer; it must be incredibly hot sitting in a field with no shade.  Unfortunately we didn’t find any diamonds, but it was something we had talked about doing for a number of years, so at least we had the experience.

Arkansas is also famous for its crystals.    We went in search of a place to dig, but it was too late in the day.  We did find a great place and we plan to return to do some digging.  Fred was able to purchase 3 interesting specimens.

The motel we stayed at was across the street from a race track (horses) and casino.  Unfortunately for us it was race season and each evening we seemed to arrive back just as the track were letting out.  The motel also allowed (for a hefty fee) parking for the track.  Minor inconvenience.

Our trip home included driving through some snow.  It was only about 2 inches, but pretty to look at.  Bitterly cold here like up North.  The heat pump never seems to shut off.  Can’t wait for Spring!!
